They are spending your money with wild abandonment

The new 108th Congress opened for business and it took less than one day for the new Congress to show us it is business as usual in Washington. The business is spending your money.

Fox News reported two days ago that the U.S. Senate will quietly spend your money sometime this week to let former Majority Leader Trent Lott keep his chauffeur and car "to soften the blow" to Mr. Lott, since he is no longer Senate majority leader.

According to the Fox News report, "There is no known precedent for a Senate leader of either party who resigned his post in a similar manner retaining his taxpayer-subsidized car and driver."

Granted, the $100,000 or so that it will cost yearly to provide Senator Lott with a chauffeur and car is only a drop in the ocean of federal spending. Yet it is this kind of sneaky and callous behavior by the so-called "most deliberative body in the world" that makes the average taxpayer sea sick.

This afternoon, I called the offices of my two U.S. senators and was told this Fox News story is accurate. I then expressed my objection to this insulting misuse of taxpayers' money. Please do the same.
