Social Development

The United States of America, refined its identity through gradual, agreeable coexistence of particular cultures. Though diverse in religion, language and customs, there was a binding thread ... the population was predominately European. They were white. They were familiar with each others histories. They were aware of each others prejudices. They had been in combat with one another before. They worked at diminishing those pitfalls for the good of the future.

What appeared to be a sure formula for failure, in reality became a recipe for success. From this beginning wave of daring immigrants, a self help "free society" was being born. In time, past origins not forgotten, everyone considered themselves first and foremost ... Americans. It was fashionable to be proud of a multigenerational connection to America ... "not to country of origin." Polarization was diminishing, and America was going in the right direction.

Americans were coming together, creating a uniquely blended society, a special budding culture, in a respected new world. Word spread far and wide, depicting America as having the most advanced and precious social concept the world had ever known. Multitudes swelled the exodus to this land of promise. The immigrants were still primarily European.

As this enlarging social mosaic was being absorbed, minimizing culture clash became an imbedded constant. There was no shortage of conflict promoted by derogatory pronouncements. The tags -- mick, diego, kike, pollack, nigger, and more, in time, worked their way through outright separation and distrust of one another. It was another step forward toward solidifying our special social order ... a promising improvement. It was being accomplished from deep-seated moral convictions, not government mandated intervention.

Americans were much more focused on the future they were creating in their new world. Overbearing rejection of each others differences became restrained. Foreseeable future opportunities were more important targets. Separation lines of the mosaic began to blur. All this was happening while Americans were still mainly immigrants with European origins. As they settled with friends and family, they were quickly directed and assisted in becoming Americanized. "You are an American now," they were told. This is the way we do things here. You must learn the ways ... and "they willingly did."

In time, inflammatory stereotyping became taboo. Americans had successfully retained past culture and, at the same time, were detaching themselves from historically combative moirés. They had definitely become a "new breed."

The next distinctive group to enter America didn’t have to cross an ocean to get here. The Negroes ( a name from the past ) were freed to meld through the emancipation decree. They had plenty of catching up to accomplish, many enduring wrongs to overcome. This burden, heavy as it was, did not deter the direction new found freedom pointed to ... merging with and gaining acceptance from Americans. Horrendous as the struggle that lay ahead appeared, the will to be accepted was foremost.

Though erroneously depicted as a melting-pot, America at that time better resembled an assemblage of nations than any UN dramatization existing today. The ridiculous elite in the UN seem to be cultivating just the opposite concept.

America was developing a proud social cohesiveness. Unfortunately, politically devised laws that corrupted and stigmatized cultural sensitivities ... were arrogantly foisted on us without concern. Culture cannot and, more important, should not be divisively designed. A multi-cultural society can exist and still exhibit united chauvinism. It once existed in America, and not that long ago. All groups could, and did when appropriate ... refer to country of origin. It was not necessary, nor fashionable to preface "I am an American" with a hyphenated indication affirming country of origin. Why is it in vogue today? Is the present upsetting picture of our future causing a retreat to polarized populations?

Immigration has never stopped. New cultures pour in ... cultures that make no pretense about resisting "American traditions." Though these new immigrants proclaim their desire to become Americans, one glaring difference stands out ... they seem to resist becoming Americanized.

Not until the newly gathering cultures were of substantial number, did conventional society as we knew it, consider themselves to be under attack. Hispanic and Asian arrivals made their presence known in many ways. In many ways our established social acceptabilities were rubbed the wrong way and exacerbated by proliferating political decrees. Though our government is expected to listen to us, upholding our practiced sound social expectations is not something they want to abide by. By now, government is also rubbing us the wrong way. If anyone has lost direction, it is not "We The People." Debilitating changes are being legislated without our consent, and certainly without our participation. By whom? For whose benefit? Is "Power" a likely mitigant?

More recent arrivals to our shores, seem to be more culturally bound than past participants in America’s formation. They display outwardly abrasive attitudes, and resist normal entrance into mainstream American culture. As a result, they have made themselves targets of apprehension and prejudice. Polarization grows stronger. Battle-lines harden. Government, unconcerned with their past mistakes -- proven to be least competent in social management ... continues to interfere and impose further meddlesome decrees. They insist upon solving social ills by mandate. Is this politics at its worst -- political abduction for ballots sake ... or corporate government intrusion for the sake of future agenda?

I do not believe that racism is at the core of resenting different, increasingly populous, cultural incursions. What I do believe, is that Americans resent the latest citizenry’s outspoken defiance of established mainstream practices. Brazenly pushing to alter the fabric of a successful American society, they instigate combative actions. One example of my point is the raging controversy caused by the demand for bilingual education "depleting" an already struggling education system. Rather than putting out the fire, government exacerbates the problem by funding the abnormal. Who is to blame for instigating culture polarization? Culture clashes between Americans and new arrivals seems to be supported ... perhaps initiated by our government. Why ... "irrationality or purpose?"

Government, orchestrated by "Power," is bringing a great society to its knees. What was justly overcome is now being unjustly demolished. With "chip on shoulder," sanctioned as politically correct, polarization has advanced to labels such as ... "I am an Afro-American, a Mexican-American, and so on." The justification for this new foreign identity requirement is ... one’s language and culture should not be lost. This is creating a modern day battle, unconcerned that we fought that battle before and achieved a workable ever improving truce.

One festering social explosion occurred in Los Angeles, spurred by the Rodney King travesty. Media flooded the airwaves with their pros and cons. Immediate rhetoric centered on racial explanations. The most revealing, but ignored proclamations came from leaders in the black community. Over and over again I heard them say ... "This is not about racism, it’s about class economics." Who is responsible for allowing the insidious growth of a desperate, economically impaired, lower echelon of society?

After two hundred years of painstakingly trying to soften diverse cultural differences, we are regressing into a segmented, disorganized, clamoring, destructive country. The implications of this reality has become fodder for the media, politicians, academia, and the endless stream of so called experts on societies’ ailments. An array of opportunistic self made celebrities are making fortunes on the backs of the injured.

Everyone picks apart our present dilemma, concentrates on autopsying minutia, and believe their insignificant solutions are answers to all our woes. If these destructive soothsayers succeed in diverting us from todays total reality, it will continue to be a foreboding era for America. We are living in the center of a political hell-hole ... as our politicians resort to manipulating public rage as a bureaucratic football.

The 1996 voter turnout was the lowest ever in recent history. This translates into gaining office by selection through a minority vote. What has happened to a majority of educated opinion? They have given up on integrity of government, and are concentrating on entrepreneurial ways of holding on to their "American Dream." It demands total concentration on reality, and distancing ones self from authoritarian doublespeak. Weren’t those the very pressures our founding fathers separated us from?

Salvation through regrouping, (once again employing honesty with an earnest desire to reverse chaos into calm) will only occur if social justice and equality, becomes paramount again. Is it too late? We’ll never know if we don’t develop a plan of counterattack.

America’s short history of society advancing from its growing pains to prosperity, then quickly back to turmoil -- induces an uncomfortable yet inescapable connection to a "Power Tower," radiating corporate dominance through advantageous maneuverings.

As industry in America grew, so did power’s potential. Readily available, hard working Americans made it possible. There was the illusion of a partnership in progress. When a determined rapidly growing world market began to make significant inroads into American industries, an abrupt end to any illusion of a partnership became overwhelming. Strategies for this industrial battle, never included the workers responsible for success to date.

Multinational corporations began a rush to position themselves for renewed growth. American jobs went sailing overseas. Deals with threatening overseas opponents became one corporate tactic that ensured "lost American jobs" would never return. Our government participated with and induced the continuing exodus of industry by sponsoring the movement. "We The People" unknowingly paid for it. The corporate welfare promoted to enforce the move came from our tax dollars. Now, isn’t that crazy? Are you beginning to put two and two together and coming to the realization that our woes probably lodge somewhere within the mazes of the "Power Tower"?

Corporate tax advantages, corporate welfare (garnered from our tax dollars) speeded the emigration of our industries, our jobs, and the economic well being of America’s citizens. Again, I must repeat, in no way can this be attributed to the "buggy-whip" explanation. Every article that we use daily, which is now manufactured overseas, did not cease to be needed, and most likely will not be in the foreseeable future. The only explanation for our industries disappearing is "corporate agenda" reinforced by an entrapped, dysfunctional government.

As the makeup of the American work force changes; As the once broad ranging opportunities for upward mobility become elusive; As rising competition for the low paying jobs increases, social unrest and fragmentation are bound to become severe.

Industry having bought the obedience of our government (with more ease than ever) can proceed with and protect their agendas. They can be assured of having our government protect them from what they deem is unfair competition. American corporations produce over there, ship back here, and proclaim the cause of disappearing jobs is the effect of an unconstrainable world market. Then "they scream" like stuck pigs about competition.

As corporations secretly maneuver for dominance -- with a substantial boost by the use of our tax dollars, given to them by government collecting it from us ... American workers are getting the shaft. In more direct terms, the claim is our wages have become uncompetitive. Without protection, we have been forced to truly be subjected to the wage pressures imposed on us from third world countries. Unfortunately, we don’t have the power of Harley Davidson to have competitive imports taxed to benefit Harley.

Wage pressures are attacking workers from within our country. We pride ourselves on being a country of law and order. The word "illegal" should need no interpretation; It is easily understood. Why are we presently engulfed in defining that word "illegal"? As hordes of uninvited stream across our borders (while we argue over that word "illegal") they cost us, inflame us, polarize us; Yet our government joins in the abuse ... not willing to commit to acting upon the word "illegal." Why? Try thinking about minimum wage and easily controlled workers, in fear of

being exposed. Control is the uppermost constant of corporate agenda. Absolute control equals anarchy. Are we witnessing "anarchy in the midst of democracy," or is "anarchy replacing democracy"? If we can no longer define "illegal," what might become more difficult to define in the future? An interesting thought?

The majority of American wage-earners, pitted against concocted unfair wage competition, struggling to retain economic stability, have just about exhausted hope of cooperation from normally available sources. Left to their own lonely struggles, (economic and simultaneously increasing racial competition) America as we knew it is being destroyed. White and blue collar workers, are struggling to avoid descending the economic ladder. Minorities, trying to climb the ladder, are colliding with those in decent. The ladder to success is about to crumble. The path to tomorrow has become frightening. Corporate, through the mouths of government, tells us of a bridge to the future. Again I ask ... "Whose future?"

America has taken on the appearance of rapidly changing to a two tiered society. That it is in progress is incontrovertible. Justice has been perverted. Morality has been perverted. Our dreams have been perverted.

I have made reference before, to "Power" as it relates to the size of its territorial controllability. The bigger the territory, the more activity within it, the more uncertain sustainability of control becomes. What exists today, giving power an advantage as never before ... is the "Chip." In the blink of an eye, the "Chip" collects data, communicates, profiles, analyzes, transfers wealth ... provides every necessity to maintain control, as never before.

We are being directed to retrain for a mystical service future ... "chip enriched." Let me turn that around and develop a more comprehensible thought. We are being prodded to submit to a future of entering data into the very machines that are on their way to totally dominating our existence. Will we all submit to "Pushing Hamburger?"

Is there still time and opportunity to recapture our country and reestablish our direction ... "our dream?" Perhaps if we stop referring to government in a way that makes us appear subservient to it, that would be a start. If we once again subdivide our country and truly return power to states and communities in turn "Power" will have to return to managing smaller areas. That might give us a combative edge.

Is it any wonder "our power dominated government" resists downsizing? Downsizing would put an unwanted crimp in present agenda ... an agenda that’s tearing America to pieces.
