The destruction of Americas
backbone is taking place. Why? How can we ignore the facts. America became a world power
because she became a manufacturing power. Once Japan used to send us paper toy umbrellas
... "Now!" its the Infinity, Nikons, and other products we either
dont make anymore, or they now make better than we do.
During the past decade we have been
subjected to many explanations of our manufacturing decline. "on the one hand"
they proclaim its the right thing to do, "on the other hand" they say it
isnt being done. No matter what they say the truth is obvious; whatever you want
nowadays is made over there. Their workers are experiencing the economic improvement we
once did.
As the affluence of the American
worker grew, a result of manufacturing being a strong job base, society had a gentler
attitude. We had more relaxed time to consider the other person. Todays America has
become more polarized than ever before. Everyone is fighting for whatever crumbs are left
of the pie "power baked for someone else." In due time, if we continue to allow
the transformation of America into becoming a full fledged service society, our country
will be open for massive disruption. The government knows this. They have the
"reports warning of it." Though we paid for the reports nobody we hired wants us
in on it.
As products of our entrepreneurial
heritage were discreetly shifted to be manufactured elsewhere in total or part, (most
often in a third world environment for sale back to us), "the advantage went to
power." Though there was a labor cost saving for corporate ... the U.S. price never
reflected it. As industries continue to disappear from our job landscape, as the family
supportive jobs remaining for the worker keeps shrinking ... "Power Pigs Out."
We were once made to believe that
only unprofitable labor intensive industries would be going to Third World Countries.
Though that didnt compute it nevertheless became the rhetoric of the times --
deceitful rationale -- showcased in a language we had yet to become proficient in ...
"Babel." During those days of innocence most of the damage was done. As the
saying goes "its never too late." We have learned to listen better, spend
more time evaluating, and deciphering with better accuracy. And they know it!
From time to time, exploited labor in
other parts of the world is bound to foster the migration of a few labor intensive
industries. Those bent on advantage and greed, not capitol investment to improve
productivity here, sponsored the exodus. Our government, rather than offering advantages
for business to stay and prosper in America, did just the opposite, gave them
encouragement to leave. How could that have come about -- rewarding instead of rebuffing
power for damaging our lives? It took ages before the working class we have come to know
as "middle America" began to understand the gravity of the situation. Why? Our
government did a good job of concealing the mechanisms that enhanced the movement.
As robotics came on the scene, with
the promise that they would overcome the worlds cheap labor markets ... we believed.
Though we were the prime developers of that technology, it was never employed as
advantageously "here in America" as it should have been. When robotics were
introduced, we did have deep concerns about a resultant job loss. Well -- in a way we were
right, but for very different reasons. The rest of the world grabbed the idea. We built
the robots and shipped them everywhere but where they were conceived ... here.
"They" (offshore recipients) invested and advanced, built a better product,
created more jobs, and wound up with a flourishing workers economy.
Now whether its labor intensive
or not, the exodus goes on. Even though it could be made here, with full automation, never
touched by human hands, it will be made elsewhere.
The circle has almost been completely
closed. America has been transformed. We now exist in an imposed "cyber world."
What have we gained by being forced to adjust our lives to that auspicious sounding claim?
For one thing, we do have a new title ... "the worlds leading debtor." In
the light of all the advertised prosperity, the truth is, the mass of society has taken
two steps backward. "Real wages" are down. Disposable income is shrinking as
credit card debt climbs. Doubt that? Why has congress held hearings about credit card
debt? There must be a big enough problem that cant be swept under the rug, (though
thats what they will try to do). Money to sustain our social programs (we are told)
is about to disappear. The homeless face us everywhere in growing numbers. That was the
topic in another congressional inquiry. How many examples must there be before everyone
screams ... "enough." This picture is not at all in step with an economy that is
supposed to be terrific.
Have we really lost our industry
simply because corporate took advantage of cheap labor elsewhere, or is there more to it
than meets the eye. If we restrict our focus of industrial migration to places like Mexico
and the Philippines, cheap labor can cloud our observations.
Lets look at Germany and Japan.
They are models of beneficial industrial expansion, workers benefits, and social caring.
They are societies imbued with a responsibility for family. With that in mind, what has
induced them to manufacture the products our companies tossed aside. They are not only
making better products, they are making a better society. Their workers are climbing a
ladder as ours descend. They are the ones investing in, not borrowing from, the future.
Did they accomplish it by themselves?
The knowledgeable will answer "of course not," we rebuilt their countries, we
provided the money for it to happen. Was that all we did ... help them rebuild and give
them money? If so, then the thought that our leaders were foolish or deliberately
opportunistic might have some merit. Pay back of some sort might have been percolating.
Living in a country that historically
represented protection of freedom and openness of information as our absolute right ...
what has happened that caused our society at large to become so pessimistic? As the air
gets thicker, freedom and information become harder to identify. Both of those rights have
shifted disproportionately to favor the privileged. It could only have occurred with the
help of our government. They alone are not the objects of suspicion. Wherever you look,
one group or another has put themselves under the magnifying glass, and to the test. Its
become a new frenzy (a ploy) of self inspection. The problem is, its like letting
the fox guard the hen house. Even so, the government is investigating itself, the FBI is
investigating itself, the ATF is investigating itself, the Media is investigating itself.
While they are all busy with mock investigations how could there possibly be time to do
the business of Americas citizens? Spending all their time attempting to vindicate
themselves, leaves you to wonder, how deep their misconduct really goes.
Had I not experienced life overseas,
I might never have realized how involved in politics a society can be, and how carefully
they scrutinize the media. It was then I understood how much and how easily we in America
were propagandized. Americans were a basically trusting society. We never really sensed
the need to be cautious of our governments words. Now its another story. We wonder
if we can trust anything they say.
The Seattle Post Intelligence ran an
article by W.R. Herst Jr., "The Editors Report." It was worded in a way that
lambasted liberals constant cries that our country is declining in riches and
strength. It went on to illustrate the strength of our largest corporations. Examples were
given. The attempt to applaud corporate success through downsizing, (to say the least),
was flabbergasting. To me, this is an example of powers influence coming at us
through the media.
This, is an excerpt from a report by
Bernard M. Kaplan and their newspaper writers at "World affairs." Kaplan, based
in Paris, reported on how American companies are buying up Europe through acquisitions.
American companies have been
increasing their spending on plants and equipment overseas at a record pace, according to
the Paris based OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). This
intergovernmental agency keeps watch on such activities. One item the report highlighted
was that in the year 1993, U.S. investment abroad will total fifty five billion, a rise of
fifteen percent over the previous year.
The report continued. American firms
are on a take over spree in Europe. They acquired 185 European companies last year valued
at fifteen billion. Thats twice the number they bought at the height of the world
boom in 1988. The OECD estimates U.S. acquisitions in 1994 could be as many as 225 and the
number will keep going up each year.
Surely downsizing here in America,
and simultaneously upsizing in Europe, is a contradiction when evaluated with the
reasoning we are fed. To boot, we are never exposed to the true movement of corporations
that exist in spite of our founding fathers intentions to prevent it. How far have
we been removed from original intent? How well protected are the marauders of our founding
documents.
In an article -- "The Latest
Spurt of U.S. Investment Over Here" -- the London Times called it "a
signal" U.S. companies are displaying daring and imagination in their endeavors.
IBM and Digital Equipment Corp., both
of which made good profits last year, are more advanced and more competitive than many
Japanese and European rivals.
In Europe, GM is raking in profits
and racing ahead of competitions production methods. They produce more and make more than
their competitors. GM Europe is using five hundred million dollars of profits to take over
and modernize an auto plant in what used to be communist East Germany.
Reading the foregoing, doesnt
it become a little difficult to reconcile corporate actions there ... with the downsizing
those same companies are putting us through here? Obviously the reasons given for creating
havoc here, such as global competition, or its work that should be done in third world
countries, " is not the truth."
Truth or not, while they splurge
overseas, in America, the battle cry remains ... "downsize, get lean and mean, force
pay cuts to help corporate survival." They are all contradictions to what corporate
is really involved in ... "deceit." Any attempt to further beguile us with
double talk as more eye opening information reaches us, is bound to infuriate us and
corporate knows it. The successful capture of our government as planned, and the resulting
decline of a peoples economy emerged from devious forfeiture of our laws and the result
can now neutralize our American dream.
GM cries poverty here as it shifts
wealth from one of their pockets to another ... while emptying ours. If this "new
world environment" forges ahead unchecked, society will eventually be under the will
of powers advantageous edicts. Never again will we be steered by our own free will.
For the moment others are
experiencing a rising standard of life. It will only last as long as a particular
corporate entity remains a super star in their region. It has become a small world,
getting smaller by the moment. Conquer -- divide -- decimate and leave ... cant go
on forever. The resulting shambles will be visible everywhere.
As we listen to the ballyhoo of
government, are deluged with corporate complaints and excuses, diverted to accept some
kind of illusory service based economy, trapped into an ever decreasing wage marke
... what else do they have up their sleeve?
How much longer will the lawless
manipulation of our lives be allowed to continue? Our Constitution, our laws, (laws that
were to be protected by those who took an oath to do so) -- are clear and unmistakable in
their intent. "We The People" are empowered to be the ultimate protectors of our
cherished documents. The corruption of those documents by "We The Ruthless" ...
must be brought to a halt. Disrupting the trend would be a beginning.
